Why IE Gutters Need Attention
Santa Ana Debris Accumulation
Santa Ana winds funnel through the IE passes and deposit everything they carry — leaves, pine needles, dust, and fine sand — directly into your gutters. One wind event can fill a clean gutter system to capacity. After a full season, you're looking at compacted debris that blocks flow completely. Garden hoses won't move it. It needs to be physically removed and the system flushed.
Monsoon Season Flooding Risk
The IE gets most of its annual rainfall in a compressed window from November through February. When those storms hit, they hit hard. Clogged gutters can't handle the volume, and water overflows directly against your fascia, down your walls, and pools at your foundation. One heavy rain with blocked gutters can cause more damage than years of normal wear.
Palm Frond Blockages
Palm trees are everywhere in the IE — and they drop fronds, seeds, and fibrous debris year-round. A single palm frond wedged across a gutter opening creates a dam that catches everything behind it. The result is standing water, accelerated corrosion, and mosquito breeding conditions. Properties with palms need gutter service more frequently than the standard twice-a-year recommendation.
Compressed Rain Season, Maximum Risk
The IE gets 80% of its rainfall in 4 months. That's when clogged gutters become expensive problems. Foundation erosion, fascia rot, and landscape washout all happen during this window. The time to address your gutters is before the first storm, not after the damage is done.
Common Questions
How often should gutters be cleaned in the Inland Empire?
At minimum twice a year — once before monsoon season (late summer) and once after the Santa Ana wind season (late fall/early winter). Properties with overhanging trees, especially palms, eucalyptus, or pines, may need quarterly service. IE gutters accumulate debris faster than coastal homes due to constant dust deposition and seasonal wind events.
What are the signs my gutters are clogged?
Water overflowing during rain is the obvious one, but there are earlier warning signs: visible debris or plant growth in the gutter line, staining or streaks on your fascia boards, water pooling near your foundation after rain, birds or pests nesting in the gutters, and sagging or pulling away from the roofline due to weight. If you see any of these, don't wait for the next storm.
Do gutter guards eliminate the need for cleaning?
No. Gutter guards reduce the volume of large debris entering the gutter, but fine particles — desert dust, pine needles, roof granules, and small seeds — still get through and accumulate over time. In the IE, dust alone can build up enough to restrict flow within a single season. Guards also need periodic maintenance themselves. We clean gutters with and without guards installed.
What happens if I don't clean my gutters?
Clogged gutters cause water to overflow and pool around your foundation, which can lead to erosion, cracks, and moisture intrusion into your slab or crawlspace. Backed-up water also rots fascia boards and soffits, creates ideal conditions for mold growth, and attracts pests. In the IE, where 80% of annual rainfall hits in a 4-month window, one neglected season can cause thousands in damage.
Can you clean gutters at the same time as a roof cleaning?
Yes, and we recommend it. Roof cleaning dislodges debris that ends up in your gutters, so combining the services means everything is cleared in one visit. We offer a bundled rate for roof and gutter cleaning together. It's the most efficient way to handle both and ensures your entire drainage system is functioning properly before rain season.
